Rape culture is an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women and men is normalized and excused through various media slogans and references.
“She wants the D” references a series of memes that justify men’s sexual advances, most of the time nonconsensual, on women. This slogan and its use to celebrate UO’s atmosphere is a symptom of what feminists have called rape culture. Rape culture is perpetuated through misogynistic language, the objectification of women’s bodies, and the glamorization of sexual violence — thus creating a society that disregards women’s rights and safety.
How we can demand respect for women at UO
- Hold people and institutions accountable for using language that objectifies or degrades women. You can sign our change.org petition to send a message to UO’s director of licensing and brand management the message that UO students, alumni, and fans do not support the use of UO’s image in supporting rape culture.
- Speak out against trivializations of rape that you hear about on campus, whether it be bad jokes, campaign rhetoric, or marketing slogans.
